For much of classical music history, female composers have existed in the margins—talented, prolific, and innovative, yet largely absent from concert programs and textbooks. Women such as Fanny Mendelssohn, Clara Schumann, Louise Farrenc and Hélène de Montgeroult composed works equal in craft and imagination to their male contemporaries, but social expectations often limited their education, publication, and public recognition. Many were encouraged to compose only for private settings, while others saw their music attributed to male relatives or dismissed as secondary. As a result, their works were rarely performed and gradually faded from public memory. This lack of visibility has created the false impression that women were largely absent from classical composition, when in reality they were consistently present but systematically overlooked. Today, renewed interest in female composers challenges this historical imbalance, revealing a richer and more diverse musical past than audiences were ever led to believe.  This album features some of the greatest female composers from the 18th to the 20th century; here is a brief overview. Helene De Montgeroult’s piano music bridges the Classical and Romantic eras, featuring expressive harmonies and a vocal approach to keyboard writing that anticipates later Romantic composers. Fanny Mendelssohn’s works are marked by lyrical intimacy and refined Romantic expression, particularly in her songs and piano music. Clara Schumann’s compositions combine emotional depth with formal clarity, reflecting her brilliance as a pianist and her command of Romantic style.
